Memorial Day

This time it's not about knitting.

My Dad, Camp Lucky Strike, France, circa 1945

"Roger travelled through France, Holland and Belgium with the 97th Infantry Division, 202 Field Artillary Bn. They joined Patton's Army at the end of the Battle of the Bulge. One of the darkest points of his life was when Roger had to aid in the liberation of a concentration camp. His unit had to force the Jews to stay in the camp when they wanted to flee into the forest. They would have certainly died in the harsh winter, but they couldn't be blamed for wanting their freedom. Roger described leaving the ovens on to dispose of the massive numbers of the dead and those who were so sick, they still died in the care of the Army." -- excerpt from a biography of my father, written by DS#2 for a high school English project this year.

Happy Memorial Day!
